The one hundred dollar note was first put into circulation on 10th, October, 1988. The five hundred dollar note was first put into circulation on 2nd July, 1992 and the one thousand dollar note on 23rd December, 1996. Who designed the first set of coins which were issued by the Currency Division of the Bank of Guyana?

Mr. William Gardner, a coin designer for the Royal Mint designed the first set of coins.

Who designed the present coins in circulation and what do they depict?

The designs of the present coins were done by three Guyanese. The designers are :

Sean Thomas            - One Dollar

Selwyn Cambridge    - Five Dollars

Ignatious Adams       - Ten Dollars

 

The one dollar coin depicts the rice as a staple food in Guyana. Its cultivation is deeply rooted in the county's culture and history.

 

The five dollar coin depict sugar cane, as a principal agricultural crop which contributes significantly to the economy.

 

The ten dollar coin depict a legendary "porknocker" engaged in traditional small-scale gold mining.
