Unauthorised Duplication of Currency

By virtue of Section 21 of the Bank of Guyana Act 1998 the Bank of Guyana has the sole right to produce notes and coins in Guyana. In the interest of safeguarding the integrity of the Guyanese currency, the Bank will not allow reproduction of currency notes, because these can be misrepresented as or easily confused with genuine currency notes.

The Bank also wishes to bring to the attention of the public, the fact that the reproduction of a currency note or any part thereof purporting to be a currency note is an offence under Section 272 of the Criminal Law Offences Act Cap 8:01 punishable by a term of imprisonment.
The engraving or making upon any plate, wood, stone or other material or ornament an impression which resembles or is apparently intended to resemble any part of a currency note of the Bank of Guyana, is an offence under Section 273 of the Criminal Law Offences Act. This section also makes the custody or possession of the devices used for making the impression and the actual custody or possession of any paper or material upon which the impression is made, an offence punishable by a term of imprisonment.

The Public is therefore advised to desist from reproducing currency notes or any part thereof and to comply with provisions of the Criminal Law Offences Act, failing which, action will be taken to enforce these provisions.
